paper.li - The Future of News?
July 13, 2011
I’ve discovered something that I think is actually pretty cool. paper.li is a way to draw together the news and notices that are of interest to you based on the people you follow on Twitter or Facebook. Check it out here: http://paper.li/CathRach/1310573665!

Way cool video that shows a futuristic (albeit smudgy) world that doesn’t seem all that crazy…

My $12 Tuesday
May 18, 2011
Music, like any other art, is funny in that people tend to appreciate it more when it’s popular. Yet, somehow, the acts that rise to fame are not always the most talented. How many times have I spent over $100 to sit in the nosebleed seats of some vast arena to hear highly produced versions of songs that I’ve gotten obsessed with because I have heard them repeatedly...

March 2, 2011
Weird? Yes, but what did you expect? I think it’s awesome. Thank you Lady Gaga for bringing back the music video. I’d been missing these grandiose manifestations of music’s visual identity.
‘Born This Way’ is the ultimate anthem of individuality. This was evident before Gaga released the ‘Born This Way’ music video. With the...

Quincy Jones Still Knows What's Up
December 1, 2010
Quincy Jones may be 77, but his finesse as a musical producer has not diminished a whole lot since the glory days of the early 1980s when he produced Michael Jackson’s Thriller album.
Soul Bossa Nostra is a compilation of fifteen of QJ’s biggest hits re-imagined and recorded by some pretty big names in music. The all-star line-up that QJ assembled for this album...

Santa Preparations
November 29, 2010
I love to hear about different family Thanksgiving traditions. One of my friends told me that after dinner her whole family puts on flannel onesies (with the feet) and get in front of the fire. Another friend said her family decorates the Christmas tree after their feast in preparation for Santa. As for me, we bake and decorate our gingerbread house every Thanksgiving....

Akerlof, who became one of the central figures in behavioral economics, came to the realization that procrastination might be more than just a bad habit. He argued that it revealed something important about the limits of rational thinking and...

I'll Have the BLT with a Side of Z-Scores
October 27, 2010
There are some decisions that you make in life which are wise and others that are not. Depending on the personality of the decision-maker, the ratio of wise to unwise decisions can vary.
Courses of action are sometimes selected with prudence as the motivating factor (i.e. by asking oneself: “what’s the ‘responsible’ thing to do” or “which choice is more likely to help me arrive...
I've been slacking
October 25, 2010
I have been a terrible blogging slacker recently - it makes me sad just thinking about it. This Saturday I went to the Halloween Dog Parade in Tompkins Square Park. It was $5 to enter and the money goes to manage the dog run in the park. Best $5 ever spent! The parade was highly entertaining…below are some highlights.
Self explanatory:
With all the craze about these...
It's A Miracle!
October 5, 2010
Thank goodness for my sister’s welcome distraction this evening. I have to admit, she didn’t distract me so much as I distracted myself from the HBS case study about “Hit Song Science” (it was kind of a cool case, actually) that I was reading when I stopped to IM her. During the course of our lengthy instant messaging conversation, she sent me a link to a...
The Social Network Blows My Mind
October 4, 2010
Well, I didn’t expect to like the movie “The Social Network” as much as I did, but seriously, it was one of the best movies I’ve seen in some time. Jesse Eisenberg was meticulous in his portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg and his execution was nothing short of perfection. Supporting roles by Justin Timberlake (as the founder of Napster) and Andrew Garfield (who...

Midwest, Day Two

First entry as an Illinois resident. I am presently sitting in the waiting room at Bredemann Chevrolet on Dempster Street in suburban Chicago (due to a problem with the door on my “ride”, a 1994 Chevrolet Z28 Camaro convertible…that’s another story for a different day). There are 9 of us Chevy drivers sitting in this waiting room. My presence here just...

If you know me, then you know that I love to play golf. I have been playing since I was ten when I got my first set of clubs (they came in a hideous “Spalding” golf bag) for either a birthday or a holiday (who can remember these things after a while).
I’d like to think I’m a pretty good golfer, but it totally depends on the day, so I’ll leave it...

Back from hiatus
August 18, 2010
I have been MIA recently and I apologize. Now work is in a slow August slump and despite some boredom, I am enjoying it. This means more time to work out and take leisurely lunches…can’t really complain about that. I have been working out in the mornings and really like it. This weekend Rachel and her sister Rebecca came out to the Hamptons and we had a lovely time. We...

Tattoos. They’re a controversial subject and I will respectfully decline to declare myself “pro” or “anti”; however, in the last 5-7 years, I have observed a marked change in the way tattoos are worn and presented and witnessed what appears to be a change in the demographic profile of the tattooed population. Before you read on, please note that no...
Walking Through Streets on a Wednesday Evening
August 5, 2010
Tonight, Catherine and I met up for our usual: a workout followed by dinner. We met at 7 and headed east on 23rd street for a too-hot run along the East River. Circa the Williamsburg Bridge, sweaty and finding it hard to breathe in the 90+ degree weather, we decided to stop running and commenced the walking portion of our evening (or so we thought). We turned to cross the FDR and...

July 21, 2010
Well, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, there is absolutely NOTHING BETTER than riding in a convertible in nice weather listening to good music. But when you don’t have the convertible, the right tunes can improve just about any situation. Music, after all, makes life so much better, and so, on that note, I’ve put together - in the grand tradition...
more talk from montauk
July 20, 2010
Sure, the Hamptons is filled with pretension and spoiled folk. But what the East End is really about, is escaping reality and marrying the beach and the indoors. On a nice day it feels like a real waste to be in the house. This Montauk residence (featured in NY Mag) truly celebrates that union, subtly separating the inside from the out. The bedrooms even have sliding doors that open...

How was everyone’s weekend? Mine was great, but it would’ve been better had I known about this invention. Is this of great concern to anyone else? When I want to unwind after a long day at the office, I pour myself a glass of vino. But often, once I’m parked on my couch, I have no great need and/or desire to get up for several hours! Now I can pour myself a full...

As a CBS employee, sometimes I get asked to do cool things. These moments can be few and far between but when they happen they are f-u-n. Today at lunchtime I went with some of my coworkers to the taping of the CBS Early Show. It was the start of our summer concert series and Enrique Iglesias performed. This was an experience…100 degrees and sweating profusely among overly...
Joan Armatrading kills it
July 16, 2010
Yes, I may be a bit young to know Joan Armatrading’s music. I wasn’t even born yet! But when it comes to music I can be an old soul and when given the opportunity to go to Joan’s concert last night at the Nokia Theatre I said why not!British singer songwriter, with an apparent cult-lesbian following, is among that breed of females in the 70s…compared to the...

So, it was in the car on the way back from Hyannis after July 4th weekend with my friend Kate that I first heard this new Eminem song featuring Rihanna, “Love the Way You Lie.”

There are some places that you visit that are so memorable that they touch you in some way. I am lucky to have visited a few of these such locales in my quarter of a century of life. This is the story of a Craig’s List success.
Once upon a time, a 20-something found herself enamored with Lady Gaga. The music, the outfits, the interviews…this 20-something couldn’t get enough. One day, while sitting in a purple seat at Madison Square Garden for an event, this young adult looked around the stadium and realized that the venue was not that...

As Catherine and I get ready to set off for our weekends in various northeast beach destinations (Catherine: the Hamptons, Me: Nantucket), it’s hard not to get into the Fourth of July spirit…the city is virtually empty, the office is virtually empty, and the thought of lobster and barbecuing is making my mouth water even more than usual.

Strange Dog Breeds: The Komodor
July 1, 2010
Lately I’ve been on this tremendous dog kick. In the Fall I’ll be moving to Chicago to start a graduate program (and this blog will officially turn into a “tale of two cities” because Catherine will remain in New York) and I suppose I’ve had it in my head that I would really like to have a dog to keep me company. Seeing as I’ve never owned a pet,...
