Midwest, Day Two
September 15, 2010
First entry as an Illinois resident.
I am presently sitting in the waiting room at Bredemann Chevrolet on Dempster Street in suburban Chicago (due to a problem with the door on my “ride”, a 1994 Chevrolet Z28 Camaro convertible…that’s another story for a different day). There are 9 of us Chevy drivers sitting in this waiting room.
My presence here just barely affects the average age of the room’s population, about 83, and everyone is white white white. In fact, I might be the first Jewish person these people have ever laid on eyes…better not say anything.
The man across from me is hacking something awful. I’m pretty sure he just coughed up a large wad of phlegm. Lovely. The lady to my right is wearing a knit vest with an embroidered lighthouse on it and the woman next to her is wearing beige leather velcro sneakers. Oh, and I should mention that she’s reading The Bible…not Vogue, the real bible, like with Jesus and the saints and all of that.
This is definitely a Fox News crowd.
Ironically, the TV in here is showing an episode of Oprah about a black HIV positive gay man. The ones who are listening are clearly appauled based on the looks on their faces.
Oh look, another octogenarian just walked in!
If you think I’m fabricating this story, please see the enclosed photograph for a sampling of my Chevrolet waiting room compatriots…

…you should feel confident now that I am not exaggerating the situation.
